How to visit .onion sites
The sites indexed on Umbrixa use .onion addresses,
reachable only through the Tor network. Here are all the available methods.
Tor Browser Recommended
Windows ยท macOS ยท Linux ยท Android
The official and safest method. Tor Browser is a Firefox-based browser that routes all traffic through the Tor network, ensuring anonymity and full access to .onion sites. It requires no extra setup: install, open, browse.
Brave Browser - Private window with Tor
Windows ยท macOS ยท Linux
Brave natively integrates Tor support in its private windows. It does not offer the same level of anonymity as Tor Browser (it does not isolate circuits per site) but it is handy if you already have Brave installed.
Orbot + browser of choice
Android
Orbot is a Tor VPN for Android that routes the traffic of any app through Tor. You can use it with any browser that supports proxies, or enable the global VPN mode.
Onion Browser
iPhone ยท iPad (iOS)
The official Tor browser for iOS, recommended by the Tor Project. The limitations of the Apple platform slightly reduce the level of anonymity compared to the desktop version, but it remains the best choice on iPhone and iPad.
Onion Browser on App Store โTails OS Maximum privacy
Windows ยท macOS ยท Linux (live USB)
Tails is a live operating system that boots from a USB stick and leaves no traces on the computer. It ships with Tor Browser preinstalled and routes all traffic through Tor. It is the solution with the highest level of anonymity and security, used by journalists and activists.
Download Tails OS โSecurity notes
- Always download Tor Browser only from torproject.org. Avoid unofficial mirror sites.
- Do not enable JavaScript when browsing sites you do not trust.
- Do not open documents downloaded from .onion sites while connected to Tor.
- .onion sites have no visible SSL certificate: encryption is provided by the Tor protocol itself.
- Umbrixa indexes only legal sites, but the Tor network also contains illegal content: browse responsibly.
